We are the stories we tell ourselves.
We are the stories we tell ourselves. - Shekhar Kapur
This quote has been my guiding light for years. It has empowered me to push back against those who want to limit me to a single identity, story, or perception. It has given me the courage to break out of restrictive molds and embrace the full, complex, multidimensional person that I am.
Every moment, every experience adds a new chapter to the ongoing narrative of our lives. Whether they bring joy, fear, wins, or a missteps. These moments, both big and small, come together to shape our stories. They shape what we tell ourselves about who we are, where we've been, and where we're headed.
Our stories impact how we see the world, and how we act. They either hold us back, keeping us stuck in the past, or set us free to explore the yet unwritten chapters of our lives.
The question is, are we conscious authors or passive readers of our own stories?
Who is holding the pen?
Is it our inner critic, societal expectations, our past, or even our 4th grade bully?
Sometimes we don't even realize we're letting harmful stories take control. They sneak into our thoughts, coloring our perceptions without us even noticing. The narratives we absorb, whether from external sources or our own inner dialogue, have a real impact on our mental and emotional health. And if left unchallenged, they can drag us down into a narrative of self-doubt, limitations, and pain.
But they aren’t set in stone.
They aren’t bound within the rigid pages of books. Instead, they are more of a fluid, adaptable work-in-progress—a preliminary draft that's constantly open to improvements and modifications. We have the power to pick up the pen and reshape them as we see fit.
Embracing this truth is not just liberating; it's transformative.
When we make a conscious choice to reframe our life story, reinterpret our past experiences, reshape our present circumstances, and dream of a different future - we open the door for profound personal evolution and transformation.
We have the power to rewrite our stories.
And as we do, we can free ourselves from the limiting beliefs and perceived constraints that previously hindered our growth. Rewriting our internal story allows us to transcend what we thought was holding us back and fully realize our capabilities.
Our stories aren’t things that happen to us—we have the power to create them. And in this potent act of creation, we get to decide who we are, what we are capable of, and which direction we take.
The stories we choose to stick with, the ones we believe in, they become a compass guiding our choices and attitudes. We have the power to decide which stories lift us up and which ones we need to let go of because they are holding us back.
So go ahead and start writing and rewriting. You get to be the author of your own story.
Your life is a story. Write well. Edit often. - Susan Statham
